I had my second baby in June this past Summer.  By August, only two months postpartum, I had had it up to here with all the junk in my house so I became the crazy lady just throwing everything out on my front lawn for a yard sale –selling at incredibly low prices.

I set up my newborn baby in a rocker by the front door and haggled with each deal seeker and bargain hunter over one measly dollar for a fairly new Coach purse while soaking multiple shirts in sweat due to the combined 100 degree weather and postpartum hot flashes.  After two days of sales, we were able to sell a large portion of our unwanted (but still quality) belongings but still had quite a bit left over.  I wasn’t quite ready to just throw them on the curb so I grudgingly brought them back in, put it all in boxes ready for the next yard sale.

Now that it’s February and practically Spring (ok, on some weekends it is) I’ve been trying to think of another weekend to host another yard sale and do a little Spring Cleaning.  The problem is that between my five year old’s social calendar, my husband’s work schedule, and Texas weather I just can’t find the perfect weekend to host it

VarageSale App Dallas Moms BlogAs if by some divine intervention, I was given the opportunity to try out VarageSale — an online community for buying and selling. Last year, Amanda shared how simple their website was to use, but now they’ve made it even more convenient.

The ability to post and sell items is seriously easy–even from the mobile app.  Just upload an item and wait for all the offers to roll in!  One of the features I especially appreciated was the ability to leave praise for members so that I felt more secure in my transactions.

I may have gone a little “VarageSale happy” in my home, posting not only the remaining items in my boxes, but also going around my house and pulling out all the things I once loved but don’t quite have the space to appreciate anymore.  My husband truly appreciated our newly decluttered areas at the start of the year and I loved the extra cash I was bringing in.

Sure, with having a yard sale you can get a mass amount of belongings out of your house.  But you have to deal with the (often multiple at a time) haggling customers, heat, physical labor, and only getting a couple of dollars when a true fair price may be two or three times that.  I will gladly take the extra steps of prearranging a price online, setting up a meeting spot based on convenience and not feeling like I was ripped off over a yard sale any day!

VarageSale was started by a mom on her maternity leave and has grown to communities all across the US and Canada. There are currently five active buy and sell communities in the metroplex.
