Summertime Treats

2

Whoa, y’all! It is HOT here in Big D! I expect these temperatures in August, but June? No thank you! I don’t know about you, but me and my kids are having to get creative to find ways to stay cool.We live in an older home and our AC unit just can’t keep up with the hotter temperatures outside, leaving it warm inside our house in the afternoons. A few weeks ago, I posted two summertime snack recipes. Those snack mixes are still a hit, but recently I’ve found a few treats my kids love that help keep us cool in this crazy hot weather!

We’ve been fans of the Yogurt Pop for a few summers now. I bought our popsicle molds at IKEA but I have seen similar ones at Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I buy the big tubs of yogurt, pour it into the containers, and freeze. It makes eating yogurt more like a treat and the kids love that it is like a popsicle.

Speaking of popsicles, they are another great way to stay cool! I’ve been known to buy whatever kind of popsicles my kids want- Dora, Rainbow, etc… but I feel guilty because they are not healthy at all! Well, this blogger recently shared 30 homemade popsicle recipes with her readers and I must say they all look tasty and some are super healthy. One recipe is for these Salted Caramel Pudding Pops. Probably not on the healthy side, but oh my word they look delicious.

And for another great snack that beats the heat, we have put a twist on fresh fruit by putting it in the freezer. Pineapple, watermelon, and bananas are our favorites to slice and freeze. Then when those hot afternoon temperatures hit, we pull out a variety of fruit and have a healthy, super-cold snack. Oh, and frozen grapes are also a big hit with my kids!

And last, but definitely not least, we’ve been frequenting the fro-yo and ice cream spots! Our favorite places in our area are Yumilicious, Sweet Firefly, the local snow cone stand, and of course, Happy Hour at Sonic. Going on an outing gets us out of our {hot} house and we are able to cool off with a yummy treat.

Do you have any fun summer snack ideas to share? What about great places in DFW to get a cool treat? We’d love to hear!
