Spring Break Bargains: Last Minute Ideas for This Weekend!

2

As Spring Break comes to a close you may find yourself in one of two positions. Either you are exhausted from all of the crowds at the most popular Spring Break hangouts. Or, you are raring to go but your wallet is tapped out from all the fun you’ve already had!  Never fear, Dallas Moms Blog is here.  In conjunction with our appearance today on Fox 4’s morning show, Good Day (CLICK HERE TO WATCH VIDEO ON THEIR PAGE), we are bringing you a list of some great places you can head this weekend that won’t break the bank and, as a bonus, may be a little less crowded than some of the usual spots!

First on my list is the Gentle Zoo.  Here’s the deal, I love this place.  I wrote all about everything great at the Gentle Zoo last year.  This place is located in Forney, just 20 miles east of Dallas off of Interstate 20.  Picture an operational farm, animals, a petting zoo, a playground, a giant sand box, and (randomly) a bounce house.  Admission only $5 per person, children under the age of one are free.  Best of all, this weekend they are doing egg hunts which will double your fun out there!  Take a picnic lunch and plan to sit there and enjoy the sunshine while your children run, play and discover.

This next idea is a museum that doesn’t often get its due.  The Frontiers of Flight Museum is a fun find, located right at Dallas Love Field Airport.  Adults get in for just $8. Students are $5 and children under 3 are absolutely free.  All of this week they are doing a special “Staycation” themed event with different activities to do each day.  If you head over there today you’ll learn all about helicopters.  Kids of all ages can make and fly paper helicopters, do helicopter puzzles, or even color. The museum also features a flight simulator which is a big hit with older, aspiring pilots as well as fun for moms and dads!  We’ve had lots of fun at this museum in the past and you can learn more by reading about our other experiences at Frontiers of Flight here. (We love airplanes and this museum so much this also made our original list of Spring Break ideas Krystal wrote about here!)IMG_6790

Idea number 3 for your weekend may not be super original, but we are going to try to give it an original twist.  Visit the new Klyde Warren Park and ride the FREE Trolley.  Here’s our idea.  The new park is beautiful and there will be lots to do an enjoy there. But, if there are too many people there or the lines at the yummy food trucks are a little longer than you’d prefer, we recommend walking from the park to catch the trolley in front of the Dallas Museum of Art.  From there you can ride the Trolley to uptown.  Get off, walk around, grab some pizza or sit down for a nice dinner, and then head back to where you started.

Our next idea for your weekend is to head to the Stockyards in Fort Worth.  Chances are you’ve been there once, but this weekend will be special so I say, go again! (And, if you haven’t been yet, then this is your weekend!).  This weekend the youngest member of the Stockyard Herd, a little longhorn named Texas Red, is having a big first birthday party!  On Saturday afternoon there will be cake (I’m sold), games, prizes and fun to help everyone celebrate this steer’s big milestone.  Plus you can always find pony rides, music, and other cowtown fun around every corner at the Stockyards– Check out all of our ideas for Stockyard fun right here.  Planning note: remember that cattle drives take place on Exchange Street everyday at 11:30am and 4:00pm — so plan your visit so you are there to see that as well!

Great Park in Dallas for kids and toddlers- Scottish Rite Hospital ParkOur final suggestion is to check out Scottish Rite Park.  We wrote all about how much we love this place right here.  Sometimes you just need a new playground…I understand.  This is your place.  In our opinion, it’s one of the best kept secrets in Dallas playgrounds.  There is a great toddler play area only for children under age three and lots to do there on a beautiful day — a play village, a train to climb on.  Hours of fun and did I mention, it’s free?

Need even more ideas? Check out all of the places we here at Dallas Moms Blog love to visit by searching our “Things To Do Around Town” post category.

    • Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for letting us know! We think DFW Parks.com may have let their link expire. We’ve changed it, and it’s now directions to Scottish Rite Hospital. Thank you again for the alert.
