As Kelsey and her husband Derek eagerly await the birth of their first child in September, she’s been busy decorating the nursery from scratch. With a little help from family (and some HGTV inspiration), their son will arrive in true storybook fashion!
I have to admit I am a tad jealous. I mean, Dr. Seuss…Why can’t I be this creative!?

1. What was your inspiration for this room? This may sound ridiculous, but David Bromstad was my inspiration for the nursery. He is my favorite designer on HGTV and so I tried to incorporate his fun mix of color with clean style and energy. Not sure if he would approve of what I came up with, but we like it!
2. What did you do first to the room? Where did you start? Since the day I announced we were expecting, my mom jumped on board to buy all our bedding. So, I started with that. I wanted something bright and fun that could also transition to a girl if need be for baby #2. I knew once I had that chosen the bedding, I would have my color palette to guide me for the rest of the room. So, I took the bright orange, lime and turquoise blue and went from there.
3. What is one thing you are most proud of in this room? I would have to say the Dr. Seuss wall is my favorite part of the room. My dad has always been a huge Dr. Seuss fan, so I grew up on his silly sayings and books. I didn’t want a Seuss themed nursery, but I felt this was the perfect touch and a little nod to my childhood. I knew I wanted the orange truffula tree and the quote, but my aunt is the one who did all the painting to make it really come to life. She is so talented and I could not have been happier with how it turned out.
4. What was one of the biggest challenges you faced while decorating? The placement of the furniture was difficult. It’s a decent size room and has a super high ceiling, which is nice, but I still felt like all the things that need to go in a nursery were making it cramped. My sister ended up coming over and helping me think outside the box with where everything could go. The nursery really has been a family group effort from day one.
5. Were you working with a budget when designing the room? Of course! We had certain things we wanted to splurge on to be very nice, so we balanced that out with being more thrifty on other things. The glider was our biggest splurge in the room. It’s a Best brand fully reclining swivel rocker. I know I’ll be spending many hours in that thing, so I wanted it to be nice and comfy. The blackout curtains were also a splurge item. But then we were able to get the changing table free from my cousin and repaint it. And most other items were found at discount stores such as Homegoods or Target.
Being in the world of Pinterest and Etsy, there is so much pressure to have the cutest, most creative nursery in town. We just wanted something fun, but I did get a custom light switch cover and drawer knobs to match the bedding as well as little fan pulls that I love. So, even though I’m not a crafty person, there are a few custom touches here and there thanks to all the other crafty people in the world!
