We’ve reached the point in summer where Back to School is on the horizon, which means there’s just enough time to get out and enjoy all the family fun Dallas has to offer. From free admission days to Adventure Fests and sweet deals, we’ve found the best things to do with your kids in August.

August 1 – 31 :: There are almost five miles of trails to walk, various species of birds to be spotted and an exhibit center waiting to be discovered. Enjoy free admission the month of August at the Trinity River Audubon Center. Come out and explore!

August 1 – 31 ::  Walk among free-flying native butterflies and other pollinators at the Native Texas Butterfly House & Garden at The Heard Museum of Natural Science. The butterfly garden is filled with host plants that naturally attract these lovely creatures. Little tots will enjoy playing in the tiny town that’s nearby! 

August 1 :: Bring the kids and enjoy free admission and fun family programming at Nasher Sculpture Center Target First Saturday. The big idea is Old and New, the Art Project will be creating Past and Future Puppets. While free admission is all day, the family activities are from 10 am – 2 pm.

August 1 – 2 :: Calling all ninjas! To celebrate the release of LEGO Ninjago Airjitzu flyers, the Ningago ninjas invite kids to come on an adventure with them at LEGOLAND Discovery Center. Be amongst the first to experience the new airjitzu flyers with a special practice and trick zone!

August 1 – 2 :: Inspired by the YouTube “Let’s Play” videos and with over 80 vendors, 70 Arcade cabinets, a huge Smash Bros Tournament, a Special Tetris World Championship Qualifier, Retro Game Tournaments, the Let’s Play Gaming Expo celebrates everything that is gaming.

August: 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 :: Come to Bake and Play Cafe every Sunday and give mom a break from 12 pm – 3 pm. Dad’s Club Pizza Party lets dads and kids hang out, enjoy good food and great play with friends. Nosh on a large pizza, kid-sized beverages and decorate cookies for dessert! $20 with coupon, for 1 adult and 2 kids.

August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 :: Join other kids at Play Street Museum  in Frisco for a story time and milk & cookie snack session. Open play available before and after story time! 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm.

August 4, 11, 18, 25 :: Brave the hot summer sun and head for Klyde Warren Park for a chance to play with Imagination Playground blocks. It’s a whole new world each time kids play with these larger-than-life blocks. Every Tuesday from 9 am – 12 pm.

August 5, 12, 19, 26 :: Tall Tales Story time on the GeO-Deck is held every Wednesday! Perfect for the younger set, the Dallas Public Library Children’s Librarians reads picture books and sings songs on the GeO-Deck from 11 am – 11:30 am. Please email [email protected] to confirm your spot.

August 7 :: March of Dimes is hosting a community baby shower in the Dallas area for local pregnant women and parents who participate in March of Dimes community education programs: Proceeds from the shower encourage pregnant women to seek early and consistent prenatal care through incentive-based community education programs.

August 7 – 9 :: Bookworms, mark those calendars! The Annual Friends of the Plano Public Library Book Sale is back. Grab a new page-turner for you or the littles from over 100,000 gently used books, DVDs, CDs, records and more.

August 7, 14, 21, 28 :: Drop off the kids for Friday Night Fun at the City of Richardson Gymnastics Center and enjoy a night out! Every Friday, the Gymnastic Center let kiddos test out their gym skills, enjoy a creative project and snacks! Register online and be sure to hurry, as space fills up quick! Rates are $10/hour for non-residents, $7/hour for residents.

August 8 :: Come join the AirHog ball players for the Scout Camp Out at the Ballpark in Grand Prairie! Scouts have the option of coming to the game or coming to the game and camping out at the ballpark. Merit badges and belt loops may be earned throughout the evening. Events will include basketball, baseball, swimming, drive-in style movies and archery, for starters!

August 11 : Science class was never like this! Doktor Kaboom takes kids on a journey of scientific exploration. A combination of Mister Wizard and the Nutty Professor with a dash of German rock star added for fun, he travels the world with a fully equipped lab, a wicked cool haircut, and a love of performance that knows no bounds. Laugh one second and gasp in awe the next.

August 8, 15, 22, 29 :: Celebrate summer!  Spend an evening at San Jacinto Plaza, downtown Rockwall’s newest public space, and enjoy live music. Café style tables and chairs allow for cozy seating. Guests are welcome to bring their food and beverages, or grab a bite from any of the locally owned restaurants downtown. 

August 12, 14, 15 :: Breitling Youth Theater presents the classic and beloved tale of Mary Poppins, the nanny we all wish would drop in and add sparkle to our lives! Show times: 8/14 at 6:30 p.m., 8/15 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tickets: Adults $10, Students and Seniors $8, 3 years & under are free.

August 15 :: Arthropods rule! Join Texas Discovery Gardens for the Butterflies and Bugs! Family Festival. Discover live and pinned insects, family friendly activities, butterfly house tours, crafts and more. 

August 20 :: Enjoy ‘fancy’ activities, tea, snacks, and more to celebrate the story of Bonjour Butterfly at Texas Discovery Gardens. Starting promptly at 10:30 am, the party ends with crafts and special edition of the noon butterfly release!

August 22 :: Get hot roasted Hatch chiles at Grand Prairie Farmers Market’s annual Hatch Chile Festival. Listen to live music, enjoy food, and shop the market’s fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, coffee, tea, tamales, jellies and relishes, grass-fed meats and handmade soaps and candles. 

August 21 – 23 :: Experience the ultimate in outdoor adventure at the Coleman Family AdventureFest. From hands-on activities and celebrity guests the Irving Convention center will be packed with fun both inside and outside for ages 7 and up. Try everything from archery and launching rockets, to fishing, ATV safety, robotics, a virtual zip line, and a climbing wall. 

August 23 :: There’s a sweet treat at Six Flags Over Texas today! The first 200 guests to purchase a double scoop of ice cream at Six Below featuring Breyers® between 12 pm – 5 pm can scoop up an awesome upgrade to a sundae plus a single scoop ice cream sundae! Yup, the more ice cream, the merrier.

August 30 – 31 :: It’s DFW’s favorite consignment sale for gently-used children’s and maternity clothing, toys, books, games and equipment with twice-yearly events. Head for the Plano Center on Sunday and Monday, there’s free admission and parking!
