Expressing Creativity through Clothing with Carter’s at Kohl’s

As a mom of 3 boys (all within a 5 year age of one another), I often struggle with finding ways to help them express their differences. My oldest is more reserved. He’s quiet and shy, but when in his element becomes such a fun, loving kid that most of the world doesn’t get to see.

My middle is the artist of the family. He definitely moves to the beat of his own drum and is the total opposite of my oldest. He has no fear walking up to strangers and telling you “how it is”. And at any given time you’ll probably find him using his talents in some way – whether it’s painting, tracing, coloring. He could spend all day creating works of art and be completely happy!

And then there’s the baby. At 18 months old, we’re already seeing his personality shining through, and of course, he’s not like any of the others. He’s a great mix of both- one minute he’s taking down his older brother with loving hugs and the next minute throwing his sippy cup across the room because his squeeze pouch is empty. He LOVES books and exploring the world outdoors. Of all my kids, he’s the first I’ve ever seen voluntarily go over and sit in a pile of dirt and just start playing.

While these are all differences I see daily, but to the outside world, they may just seem like ordinary, run-of-the-mill quiet boys, but that’s not what I want for them. Whether their too shy to say hi or come across as a little bold to others, I am always looking for ways to let their true personality shine.

Over the last few years, clothing was NOT an option when it came to expressing their creativity. As many boy moms know, we kind of get the shaft compared to what those little daughters get to wear. There’s no accessories. Most boy clothing usually involves a car or basketball and possibly a phrase like “Mom’s Little Man.” And that’s about it.

I’d just about given up and had accepted the fact that my boys would often find at least one other little boy on the playground wearing the same shirt as him at any given time until Kohl’s reached out to Dallas Moms Blog. Kohl’s is teaming up with Carter’s on a new line that’s changing my perception of kid’s clothes!

They’ve really brought kids’ imaginations to life with their creative designs, trendy colors, and . . .(a mom favorite) accessories! From the Carter’s Striped Henley with Salmon canvas shorts for Toddlers to the Nautical Mix & Match themed outfits. But the best part is, you don’t have to spend a ridiculous amount in order to build a solid seasonal wardrobe.

With the help of Kohl’s, I took my boys straight to the Carter’s department and let them go wild! (Or as wild as boys can get for clothes.) Just as I imagined, their styles and what they were drawn to were all completely different. My older son preferred my clean cut styles where as my middle went for more of the cooler images and logos. Then of course, I picked out some outfits for my youngest that were easy to move in and emphasized his gorgeous green eyes.

Krystal Hurst
Krystal is a Dallas-native who began her career as a fourth grade teacher in Richardson RISD, but quickly changed paths to became a stay-at-home mom in 2011. Through a happy coincidence, she stumbled upon (what was then known as) Dallas Moms Blog in 2012 and found a community she’d been looking for since coming a mom. Shortly after joining the team, she gratefully accepted the “baton” passed to her as new owner of the site, and took off with it running full speed! Krystal not only helped to grow Dallas Moms into a large parenting resource, but also launched Collin County Moms in 2016; providing those in the north Dallas suburbs their community resource platform. While building a community, uniting the moms, and growing a business around this passion was a dream come true, after almost 10 years, Krystal officially stepped down as owner, and is now focusing on raising her 4 boys with her husband, Tim, and rediscovering old hobbies.
