Dog Lovers Unite! AKC Meet the Breeds is Coming to Dallas

Two years ago, my husband and I were not looking to expand our family. We had four boys (ages 4–11) who occupied every spare moment of our time and tested every ounce of our patience. While my husband had always hoped for a girl, we’d definitely reached our limit!

Then one crazy weekend, an abandoned six-month-old Black Labrador puppy stumbled up next to my boys near a pond in the woods (my parents own land in Central Texas).

Several weeks later, after multiple vet appointments and monitoring her behavior, this little puppy had us wrapped around her little paw. She was fully potty-trained, loved the outdoors and cuddling on the couch, and could calmly handle the temperaments of four fiesty young boys. We officially adopted Bella a month after she was found, and she’s been the perfect addition to our family ever since.

What I love about our rescue story is that a Black Lab wasn’t what we thought we’d eventually want for a dog. Growing up, both my husband and I had always been “small” dog owners. Pug. Boston Terrier. Sheltie. Bichon Frise. Small dogs seemed more manageable (and less poop!). Although we liked the idea of a “family dog” like a Retriever or Labrador, big dogs were just outside our knowledge and experience.

We’re thrilled our Black Lab “found” her way to us, but if your family is looking to expand by a paw or two (or four!), an event like American Kennel Club’s Meet the Breeds Dallas is an EXCELLENT way to learn more about the wide range of breeds and types of dogs could fit best within your family and lifestyle!

Krystal Hurst
Krystal is a Dallas-native who began her career as a fourth grade teacher in Richardson RISD, but quickly changed paths to became a stay-at-home mom in 2011. Through a happy coincidence, she stumbled upon (what was then known as) Dallas Moms Blog in 2012 and found a community she’d been looking for since coming a mom. Shortly after joining the team, she gratefully accepted the “baton” passed to her as new owner of the site, and took off with it running full speed! Krystal not only helped to grow Dallas Moms into a large parenting resource, but also launched Collin County Moms in 2016; providing those in the north Dallas suburbs their community resource platform. While building a community, uniting the moms, and growing a business around this passion was a dream come true, after almost 10 years, Krystal officially stepped down as owner, and is now focusing on raising her 4 boys with her husband, Tim, and rediscovering old hobbies.
