HELPFUL RESOURCES

We’re coming across some great local resources to help during the next few weeks of uncertainty. Be sure to share these tips with local families who might need them!

How To Talk To Your Children about COVID-19 from the National Association of School Psychologists

KEEPING YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY

Of course, the best way to prevent this illness from spreading through your family is to avoid being exposed to this virus.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

The CDC has provided a complete CHECKLIST to help you prepare your home and family during the COVID-19 outbreak that includes tips for creating a household plan of action before it comes to your community, which preventative actions to take, and what precautions to be aware of when it appears.

HOW TO STOP THE SPREAD OF COVID-19

Adults and children are encouraged to:

  • Avoid touching faces and cover all coughs and sneezes in the crook of your arm.
  • Put the handshakes on hold! Instead, give a fist bump, wave, or air hug.
  • Disinfect all surfaces (especially metal) like doorknobs, tables, and handrails.
  • Open up those windows and enjoy the Spring weather! An increase in ventilation is key.
  • Create handwashing routines. Set alarms on FitBits or within classroom/home schedules. (We loved these Hand Washing Song alternatives from The Today Show)
  • Avoid sharing snacks!
  • Stay home at any sign of illness or if a family member feels ill.

Are you PREGNANT? Be sure to check the CDC’s website for a list of Frequently Asked Questions about Pregnancy and COVID-19 in addition to discussing any and all concerns with your physician.

Are you BREASTFEEDING? Similarly to the flu, the CDC recommends moms continue to breastfeed or expressing breast milk to an infant while taking precautions to avoid spreading the virus. For more information, contact your local physician and visit the CDC’s interim guidance page on breastfeeding.

Krystal Hurst
Krystal is a Dallas-native who began her career as a fourth grade teacher in Richardson RISD, but quickly changed paths to became a stay-at-home mom in 2011. Through a happy coincidence, she stumbled upon (what was then known as) Dallas Moms Blog in 2012 and found a community she’d been looking for since coming a mom. Shortly after joining the team, she gratefully accepted the “baton” passed to her as new owner of the site, and took off with it running full speed! Krystal not only helped to grow Dallas Moms into a large parenting resource, but also launched Collin County Moms in 2016; providing those in the north Dallas suburbs their community resource platform. While building a community, uniting the moms, and growing a business around this passion was a dream come true, after almost 10 years, Krystal officially stepped down as owner, and is now focusing on raising her 4 boys with her husband, Tim, and rediscovering old hobbies.
